About Us
In the Spring of 2005, Matthew McCutchen (then Atlee High School band director) and his friend and colleague, Dr. Terry Austin (Virginia Commonwealth University Director of Bands), collaborated to form a Wind Ensemble comprised of music educators and performers from the central Virginia region.
The group was created to perform a tribute concert for the late Frederick Fennell, a legendary figure who invented the contemporary wind ensemble while with the Eastman School of Music. Dr. Terry Austin was asked to conduct the group. The musicians and community thoroughly enjoyed the performance, so much so that the group made efforts to continue rehearsals and performances. The group was named the Commonwealth Winds and has since grown significantly in size and scope. The Commonwealth Winds continue to perform on a regular basis around the greater Richmond area, delivering educational and entertaining performances to the community, free of charge. The complexion of this talented musical group reflects that of the community; educators, public and private school teachers, professional musicians, former military musicians, medical professionals and business leaders. Individuals working in a variety of careers but sharing one common thread - a deep passion for music. We encourage visitors to explore the website, view upcoming events, and attend the performances. It promises to be a musical experience that you won't forget! Photo credit: A. Blankenship |
